Joyce Zara is a Batangueña-Bisayà Filipino/x, with Chinese lineage. Joyce is a queer, Full Spectrum Community Doula/Birth Companion/Kasama ng Manganganak, poet, grief tender, culture bearer, and a steward of the earth.

They are currently residing on the unceded ancestral lands of the Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other indigenous tribes. The land is also known as Portland, Oregon.

Joyce grew up in a barangay (rural village) where traditional native Filipino practices and customs were common. They were raised in a matriarchal village by aunts and grandmothers while their parents worked hard to provide for them and their siblings. They have always been surrounded by large families and childbearing for as long as they can remember. Joyce’s vivid memories of their ancestral lands deeply influences their way of living life as a ceremony.

While living in the Philippines, Joyce went to school in renowned De La Salle Lipa of Batangas. Joyce also grew up in the Bay Area, California and obtained a B.S. in Recreation Therapy at San Jose State University. For as long as they can remember, they have always been passionate about providing therapeutic care to those around them. Their ancestral calling to heal familial wounds, to cultivate intergenerational healing, and to re-village with a decolonizing lens is the driving force behind their labor of love.
